WHO IS FALCNHER?

Lynn Martin was born with a great love for the outdoors and an innate need and purpose to help and protect the wild kingdom. As a child, she created butterfly hospitals and animal cemeteries surrounded by walls she constructed out of twigs and tall grass. She preferred the woods, fields and her own handmade forts in tall Sycamore trees over watching television or material things. She has cared for animals and birds her entire life, and after settling in her current home state, Lynn became a licensed wildlife rehabilitator by the state of New York in 2005.

One might think that as a lover of the wild that Lynn would have issue with the hunting aspects of falconry but not so. Being raised in Wisconsin she had a father, brother and other family members that hunted and are true conservationists. In Lynn’s words, “understanding the relationship between predator and prey is essential in being a respectful hunter or falconer and it all comes down to respect and balance.”

Lynn is a member of the New York State Falconer’s Association (NYSFA) and she currently holds a falconry license by the state of New York as well as by the Federal U.S. Fish and Wildlife Department. Lynn also worked for two years in the raptor center at Green Chimneys in Brewster, NY which houses and cares for over 50 raptors. Many of those birds are pictured throughout this site. Please visit Green Chimneys at www.greenchimneys.org.

What uniquely ties all of Lynn’s efforts together is that she has also been a life-long student of spirituality and indigenous cultures. She is a licensed Reiki Master and has studied numerous other healing modalities. Acquiring these skills and gifts, and following her own intuition, Lynn is able to assist wildlife in calming and healing ways combined with traditional rehabilitation practices. In addition to having her New York State wildlife rehabilitation permit, Lynn is working towards getting her federal wildlife rehabilitation permit so that she can specialize in raptor rehabilitation. Because raptors are considered migratory birds, and are federally protected, Lynn will need this license in order to work with them beyond the limitations set forth on her falconry permit.

Looking ahead, Lynn’s dream is to create a raptor rehabilitation and educational facility with an artistic and spiritual twist that includes performance art as well as spiritual workshops and classes. In the meantime Lynn is always thrilled to give educational presentations with her Red-tail hawk, Lady Z. She is also available to conduct workshops that focus on both the spiritual and totem aspects of feathers and bird medicine, including folklore and storytelling.
